The word Carrera, meaning race in Spanish has been a staple in Porsche naming sequence since the 50s. But does anyone know why? Where did this name originate from? Here is the untold story of the legendary Porsche Carrera name…
This story of ours takes place in the 1950s, a simpler time when the Porsche 911 was still an idea stirring around in Ferdinand Alexander Porsche’s head, James Dean was taking on the world, and the Cold War was getting under way. Meanwhile, in Mexico, a rather quiet place at the time, there was a race being hosted: The “Carrera Panamericana.” The Carrera Panamericana wasn’t your ordinary race however, as the name suggests, the Carrera Panamericana was a cross-country ordeal. Racing from one end of Mexico to the other, the race consisted of 9 stages, and 5 days of constant racing the best part  on closed public roads. Running for 5 consecutive years (1950-1954) the Carrera Panamericana was widely considered to be the most dangerous race in the world, which is exactly why Porsche got involved.
The first time Porsche got involved with the Carrera Panamericana was in 1952, when two private entrants raced their Porsches in the event. For 1953 however, Porsche racing boss, Huschke von Hanstein aka “The Racing Baron,” was ready to officially take on the event. Von Hanstein commissioned  Porsche 550 Spyders to race in the event but due to ongoing compilations only two private Porsches finished the event. But the Racing Baron returned in 1954, now with heavily modified, and purpose-built 550 Spyders for the event. The battle was a long an tough, but in the end, the two 550s flew past the finish line at a class winning average speed for the 1,908 mile race of 97.63 mph. The two Porsches, piloted by legends Jaroslav Juhan and Hans Herrmann finished 1st and 2nd in their class and 3rd and 4th overall. It was this victory that inspired the Carrera name.

Starting in 1955, Porsche began to name all its race ready models like the 356, 904, 906, 911 and 924 after the Carrera Panamericana. Porsche eventually adopted the name for the base model 911s, making the in Porsche’s history. #porsche #porschecarrera #porsche911 #porsche356 @motorlegenden

9 9 3 T A R G A Named after the Targa Florio
With the new concept, Porsche was responding to increased safety requirements for open-top cars in the American market, countering voices calling for cabriolets to be completely banned in the United States. When deciding on a name for the model, consideration was given to race tracks where Porsche has been particularly successful, quickly leading to Targa Florio – the road race in Sicily where Porsche has enjoyed great motorsport success since the mid 1950s. From the late summer of 1967, the Targa models could also be optionally ordered with a fixed and heated rear window made of safety glass in place of the fold-down plastic rear window. A solution that became standard equipment just a year later and which remained a feature of the targa more or less unchanged until 1993.

Departure from the Targa roll bar – glass roof for the 911 Targa Type 993.
The fourth generation of the 911 Type 993 was introduced in autumn 1993 in combination with a new body design, with the development of a new Targa concept from November 1995. For the first time in the 911, the front wings were wider and significantly flatter. The rear wings were also wider and ran in a straighter line to the rear. As well as extensive enhancements to the engine and chassis, generation 993 took the Targa idea in a completely different direction, without the Targa roll bar. The roof, made of tinted heat-insulating glass, running from the front window frame to the rear, was now encased within a longitudinal safety structure. Divided into electrical moving segments, it opened smoothly at the push of a button and retracted behind the rear window like a wide sliding roof. The main benefits of the new solution included reduced wind noise with a sun-drenched interior when the roof was closed. A continuing characteristic of this Targa: the tapered rear windows. The new Targa concept of the 993 series combined open-top driving pleasure with the 911 for the first time, without fundamentally changing the classic coupé roofline. With any Porsche 911 it’s easy to to put a smile on the face. The Porsche 993 was the last air-cooled Porsche.
On the one hand, a casual, confident glider, on the other hand, a red-hot driving machine - it is precisely this two-faced character of the Porsche 993 that makes this sports car so incredibly seductive. This is also reflected in demand and prices. As the last Porsche with air cooling, the Porsche 993 is already recognized as a classic and has an ever-growing fan base.

The Porsche 993 Targa, an outstanding variant of the 911 series, combines timeless design with innovative functions. Introduced in the mid-90s, the Targa features a unique retractable glass roof that offers an open-air driving experience without compromising the iconic 911 silhouette.

The 993 Targa is powered by a robust air-cooled flat-six engine that delivers exciting performance on the road. Its rear-wheel drive combined with a balanced suspension ensures dynamic and responsive handling.

Inside, the 993 Targa offers a well-crafted interior with an emphasis on driver-centric design. High-quality materials and attention to detail create a luxurious and comfortable driving environment. Technological innovations such as B. the electrical equipment and a reliable air conditioning system further improve the driving experience.

The Porsche 993 Targa, one of the least produced versions of the 993, has become a sought-after classic among enthusiasts and collectors. Its enduring appeal lies in the perfect blend of performance, style and open driving experience, making it a standout choice in the history of the Porsche sports car line. Gold Porsche 911 3.2 Coupé 1984 from Switzerland. The History: The so-called G models from 1974 and especially the 3.2 generation, which replaced the SC with a 3.0 liter engine from 1984, represent the classic 911s of the 80s and continue to fascinate generations to this day. They often represent the entry into the Porsche scene. The classic design with a powerful engine and reliable technology make it a valuable classic that will continue to show its potential in the coming years. A likeable model without the envy factor.

The engine displacement is increased to 3.2 liters by increasing the stroke to 74.4 mm.
Injection and map-controlled ignition are controlled via digital engine electronics with fuel cut-off.
The injection system is based on the L-Jetronic from Bosch.
A tubular oil cooler is housed in the front right wheel arch of all 911s.
The distinguishing features of the vehicles of the new model year are the fog lights built into the front apron and the light alloy wheels in „telephone design“.

Number of units built including turbo look and catalytic converter versions: Coupé: 35,571, Targa: 18,468, Cabriolet: 19,987

In the 1997 model year, the 993 model range was supplemented by the Carrera S. It was built in the 1997 and 1998 model years. The Carrera S corresponds to the Carrera 4S in terms of body and equipment. The only technical differences: The Carrera S has no all-wheel drive, no turbo chassis and no turbo braking system. Externally, the Porsche 993 Carrera S can be distinguished from the Carrera 4S by the steel-grey lettering “Carrera S” on the boot lid. Even more striking, however, is the split spoiler grille on the Carrera S (in contrast to the Carrera 4S) and painted in the vehicle color. A central bar in the spoiler grille creates the impression of a double grille. In addition, the front and rear indicators are yellow and not white and red. The brake calipers are black and not red. The Carrera S was delivered with 17-inch wheels as standard. Only 3,714 units of the Carrera S were produced during its two-year construction period. We had three (!) of this rare piece available in 2023. One of the owner is selling his entire collection. Means that the most valuable examples with only 50.400 km, sport seats and 18“ Turbo wheels is again available with us @motorlegenden #porschemoments #luftgekühlt #ammersee ...

The Porsche 964 brought with it a number of important updates that took the 911 formula to new heights.

When the 964 was launched, the 911 range was just 25 years old, and during that time most changes to the basic design had been made gradually. The 964 provided a much-needed technical boost to fend off the competition. Much was made of the fact that over 80 percent of the car was completely new compared to its predecessor, but beneath the new body panels still retained much of what had made the original such a desirable sports car since the ‚60s .

The biggest change was the switch to a coil-spring rear suspension, reducing the rear’s incendiary tendencies. The ABS braking system was another first for the 911, as was all-wheel drive and the cool electronically controlled rear spoiler. The Carrera 4 Coupe was the first to introduce a version of the all-wheel drive system first used in the 959 Supercar. The Carrera 2 followed soon after, along with a Cabriolet and a Targa body. Turbos and RS models were also added to the series models with the most powerful Turbo S with 381 hp and a top speed of 288 km/h. From autumn 1993, the first Porsche 993 left the factory premises in Zuffenhausen. Like its predecessor, the design is based on a draft by the then head of the design department in Weissach, Harm Lagaay. In contrast to its predecessor, the Porsche 993 looks much more modern and grown-up: the bumpers have been harmoniously integrated into the body and the rear is wider without appearing intrusive. Many details of the 964 were also further developed technically and resulted in a particularly sophisticated and reliable sports car. Porsche decided not to increase prices when it introduced the 993 and thus froze new car prices. The 993 was offered at the same market price as the 964, despite a large number of technical innovations and the associated high development costs (272 hp instead of 250 hp; completely new rear axle). #porsche #porsche911

These are Porsche’s strongest classic 911s in terms of driving dynamics. An overview of the RS/GT models at Porsche:

The Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7, 1972
The 911 Carrera RS 2.7 has long been one of the icons of automotive history. Seven-figure prices are quoted for well-preserved copies. At the time, the ready-to-drive Asket, which weighed just under 900 kg, had 210 hp and had a top speed of 240 km/h and had a fixed rear spoiler for the first time, cost 33,000 German marks. Demand clearly exceeded the 500 units required for sports approval. Ultimately, Porsche built 1,036 examples.

The Porsche 911 (G model) SC RS, 1984
Twelve years passed before another 911 had the RS logo on the hood: With the 911 SC RS, Porsche presented a pure homologation model for rally racing, of which only 21 were made. It weighed 960 kilograms and the 3.0-liter engine produced 250 hp.

The Porsche 911 (964) RS 3.6, 1991
The 260 hp 911 RS 3.6 based on the 964 series followed in 1991. With him, the technology of the Carrera Cup racing car found its way into the series for the first time. A little later there was also a 3.8 liter version with 300 hp.

The Porsche 911 (993) RS
With 300 hp, Porsche also offered this engine from 1995 in the 277 km/h RS version of the 911 type 993. In turn, it once again provided the basis for the one-make cup series Porsche Carrera Cup and Porsche Supercup. The direct link to motorsport was never lost. #porsche #porschers #porschegt #porschegt3 #porschegt3rs #porschegt3cup #porsche997gt3rs #porsche991gt3rs #porschecarrera #porscheclassic #porsche992gt3rs #porscheracing #petrolhead #ammersee #munich #drivennothidden

Beside specially made race cars like our 911 FIA GT 2.0 from 1965 with legendary Carrera 6 engine these factory Porsche models have reached 8000 rpm or more. Which one is your favorite? Porsche 911 (991) GT3 RS – 8800-rpm
The new GT3 RS doesn’t rev quite as high as its non-RS companion, but with an 8800-rpm redline, you’re not exactly missing much. Stroking the GT3’s 3.8-liter flat-six to 4.0-liters shaves off a little of the top-end, but the extra 15-hp you get more than makes up for it. Plus with that crazy wing, it’s not as if the 911 GT3 RS lacks for theatre.

Porsche 911 (991) GT3 – 9000-rpm
Porsche Enthusiasts were sad about the demise of the competition-derived Metzger engine in the 997 GT3 but Porsche quickly rectified things with a 9000-rpm redline in the GT3’s 3.8-liter. For 2018, the engine is an all-new 4.0-literally with the same wild redline, but this time around it shares many parts with the Cup race car and makes 500 horsepower.

Porsche 918 Spyder – 9150-rpm
The obvious benefit of a hybrid system is fuel efficiency, but the 918 shows us another benefit: Torque-fill. It describes the marriage of a high-strung gasoline engine with the low-end torque of an electric motor. That allowed Porsche to set the redline of the 918’s V8 at a crazy 9150-rpm without detriment to its daily driveability. #porsche #porsche911 #porschegt3 #porsche991gt3rs #porschegt3rs #porsche918 #8000rpm #race #racecar #supercar #hypercars
